The Duo’s
Profile

Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan and Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi
are the torch bearers of the hoary Lalgudi tradition.
It is an onerous responsibility to maintain the
qualitative quotient of this matchless style, and it is to the
siblings' credit that they have emerged with flying colors.
Their illustrious father and guru Padmabhushan Lalgudi G.
Jayaraman has honed, shaped and molded the duo's innate musical
talent to such perfection that this duo is regarded as top
rankers among contemporary violinists. Neither Krishnan nor
Vijayalakshmi, with determination, discipline and dedication,
have ever sacrificed the classical values of South Indian music
at the altar of mere showmanship.
Both made their debut when they were thirteen and have
never looked back.
The violin trio concerts of Lalgudi Jayaraman, Krishnan and
Vijayalakshmi radiated a melodic, musical energy that
electrified both the audience and the ambience. Their duets all
over the world have won the hearts of Music lovers. Both of them
have accompanied several senior vidwans--Krishnan's jugalbandi
programmes with leading Hindustani musicians have been widely
appreciated. Krishnan is the recipient of many a title like
Sangitha Choodamani, Kalai Mamani, and Isai Perolli.
Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi is also an accomplished
Vocalist. She has lent her voice to Dance performances and
recently to a movie "Sringaram’ the music for which was scored
by her legendary father. She was awarded the title '"Tantri Nada
Mani" by His Holiness Jayendra Swamigal at Kanchipuram and the
Award for Excellence from Maharajapuram Santhanam Foundation.
Lalgudi G.J.R. Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi are
cultural ambassadors par excellence who relentlessly strive to
create more global awareness and appreciation for the singular
idiom of classical Carnatic music. Some of the important centers
where they have performed in the past worth a mention are
Tropical Institute Amsterdam, Concertgebouw - Amsterdam; Lincoln
Center, NewYork; Smithsonian Institute, Washington DC; and
Purcell Room, London. If Krishnan and Vijayalakshmi, despite
brilliant academic qualifications, have opted to pursue an
artistic career, it is because of their deep passion for the art
and a searing will to reinforce the precious legacy that this
duo has been fortunate to inherit.
